Why You Keep Returning to the Same Relationship Patterns (Even When You Know They’re Not Healthy)

There comes a point where you start to notice the pattern. Different person, different situation, but somehow it ends up feeling the same. The same emotions, the same dynamics, the same outcome. And with that often comes frustration, confusion and sometimes even self-blame. Thoughts like “Why does this keep happening?” or “Why do I keep choosing this?”

Because logically, it doesn’t make sense. You know what you don’t want. You can recognise the red flags more quickly. You tell yourself this time will be different. And yet, something pulls you back into what feels familiar.

What many people don’t realise is that relationship patterns are not just about who you meet. They’re about what feels safe on a deeper level. Familiar does not always mean healthy. It means known.

If someone has experienced inconsistency, emotional distance, unpredictability or the need to work for love, those dynamics can become internalised. Not as something they consciously want, but as something their system recognises. So when they meet someone who reflects that same energy, it can feel strangely comfortable, even if it also feels challenging. On the other hand, when something healthier shows up, like consistency, emotional availability or calm communication, it can feel unfamiliar. And unfamiliar can sometimes be interpreted as a lack of spark, a lack of chemistry or even boredom.

So without realising it, there can be a pull back towards what feels more intense, more emotional or more uncertain. Not because it’s better, but because it feels known. This is where the cycle continues. It’s not a conscious decision to choose unhealthy relationships. It’s a pattern that lives beneath awareness, shaped by past experiences, beliefs and emotional conditioning.

And this is also why simply “deciding to choose better” often isn’t enough. Because when something unfamiliar shows up, it can create discomfort. There can be overthinking, doubt or a feeling that something is missing. And when something familiar shows up, even if it’s not healthy, there can be a sense of ease in knowing how to navigate it. So the pattern repeats, not because there’s a desire to go backwards, but because the familiar feels safer than the unknown.

Real change happens when this pattern becomes visible. When there is an understanding that the pull towards certain dynamics is not random, but learned. And that it’s possible to slowly expand what feels safe, rather than automatically returning to what is known. This doesn’t mean forcing yourself into something that doesn’t feel right. It means becoming aware of the difference between what feels familiar and what is actually healthy. It means allowing space for something different, even if it feels unfamiliar at first. Because over time, what once felt unfamiliar can become the new normal.

If you recognise yourself in this pattern, it’s not a sign that something is wrong with you. It’s a sign that there is something deeper ready to be understood and shifted.
